NOT one of Sweden’s most beautiful runestones
No, this runestone is not one of them but it is still very interesting. It is interesting to me because I am a runestone carver and since I include it in my historical travels I have had many opportunities to study it carefully.
Historisk Vandring - ett av många bra tillfällen av studier och diskution om runsten U 11
The thought was more beautiful than the result
Apparently the runecarver had the ambition to make a very beautiful carving, but he failed. The stone in itself limits the possibilities since the surface is not smooth, it has cracks and it is difficult to work on the stone when it cannot be placed so that the surface is horizontal to make it easier to carve.

The décor is planned beforehand and well thought through

All décor was painted on the stone beforehand before the work began but the difficult work position together with the uneven surface have probably worn out the runecarver’s discipline and patience. The carving has shallow carvings and the lines are uneven and uncertain.

The runes were not painted on the stone beforehand and were therefore carved without guidance. The distances between the runes were different and they are not straight like spokes in a wheel.

A few runes are more carefully carved and they are in the word for king, ”KUNUKI”. Here they are straight and not so shallow.
